The United States fought a long and bloody war in Vietnam that, even today after nearly five years of diplomatic relations, has left a legacy of unresolved issues between the two countries. Nonetheless, both sides have cooperated well on many issues and there is optimism for better and closer relations in the future.

The Stanley Foundation is particularly interested in how the model of diplomatic reconciliation and citizen reconciliation can be used as a positive example for other cases. The foundation hopes to develop projects that will continue the good relations developing between Vietnam and the United States.
